What is a fertility doula?

So, what exactly is a Fertility Doula? I’ve been asked this question enough times that I feel like it deserves its own post.

A fertility doula, or fertility support practitioner, is someone who is trained to offer education and support around the reproductive cycle. Many people who turn to a fertility doula for help are trying to get pregnant. Some are just starting out and want to be armed with as much knowledge and support as possible. Others have been trying for a while and are looking for someone to help them along. A fertility doula can help a person try to conceive naturally with their partner, or support as part of the assisted reproductive team.

Fertility support work isn’t just for people trying to conceive, though! It’s a way to empower people through knowledge, so that they better understand their body’s normal cycle. This knowledge can be used as a natural form of birth control (NOT the rhythm method), and to help identify if there seems to be any irregularities in their cycles.

A fertility doula is also there for more than just knowledge. Especially for people who are trying to conceive, emotions can run high. Sometimes you need a person to vent to, or to help you stay positive after another failed cycle. A fertility doula can be someone to turn to, who can hold space while you process your emotions and help you prepare for your next steps.
